Signs of the Ordinary #1 · City of Parabita

Three designers, six craftspeople, three permanent works in the streets of Parabita.

From gesture to object

On the first floor of Palazzo Ferrari, the exhibition shows how the three works came to life: raw materials, offcuts and semi-finished pieces trace the journey from the craftsperson's hand to the finished object. The full interviews with the three designers are also on display.

The project in brief

What lies beyond the wall?

A town takes shape through its streets, and even more through what happens in them: habits, encounters, crafts, the routes people take every day. Beyond the Wall takes design out of the home and into the shared spaces where private life meets the lives of others.

Three designers worked side by side with local craftspeople to make three pieces of street furniture for simple gestures: sitting, lingering, meeting, lighting up, celebrating. Since October 2026 they have been part of the town.

La Salentina

A contemporary luminaria · Studio GISTO

Lighting up · celebrating

It brings together the tradition of Apulian festival lights, the luminarie, and the modular trusses used for stage sets. It is an essential, almost tribal object with no decoration. Its open, modular structure can hold lights, sound, garlands and signs: it turns the alley into a place for celebration and encounter, switched on each time by the people who live there.

La Salentina belongs to everyone and is for everyone: not an icon to contemplate but a symbol to live with, not exceptional but everyday.

The table of dialogue · Andrea Mancuso

Sitting · sharing a table

It grew out of the Night of Neighbourliness, when the people of Parabita lay a single long table through the streets to share dinner. Three tables and nine seats are cast in Lecce stone powder, with centrepieces and traces of embroidered tablecloths emerging from the surface. You cannot use it like an ordinary table: whoever sits down ends up looking at the person opposite.

The empty seats invite you to sit down. Whoever does is led to engage with the person opposite, and dialogue becomes the very function of the work.

Seats and tables for being together · Giacomo Moor

Lingering · meeting

A single angled aluminium profile shapes a family of tables and seats, completed by a bench in aluminium and wood. Everything rests on one element: the joint that connects the parts. Pared back to the essentials, the pieces don't try to steal the show; they are there for the people who use the park.

The point where the parts meet is the key to the strength of these pieces, and a tribute to the public spaces where people, by meeting, become a community.

Who designed it, who made it

Each work carries the mark of those who designed it, those who built it and the place that made it possible. Here, the person who imagines an object, the person who makes it and the person who will use it share the same everyday horizon.

Born in 1981, he founded his studio in Milan in 2009 with a team of architects, designers and carpenters who follow every step from design to production. The project

Why beauty, why here

Since 2023 Parabita has been a laboratory for urban regeneration. Through Parabita per il Contemporaneo the town is building a collection of public art spread across its streets: first Votiva, then Ipogea, and now Beyond the Wall, which turns to design to make visible the relationships that hold a community together.

This is the town of the Night of Neighbourliness, the late-August evening when residents carry dinner out into the street and share it with their neighbours. The works invent nothing: they give shape to something Parabita already has, the ability to see public space as a place of closeness, care and belonging.

The three works are here to stay. They are not installations to be taken down at the end of the season, but furniture for everyday use, built by craftspeople who work a few kilometres away. For the people of Parabita they mean an alley that lights up for a party, a stone table to stop and talk at, a park with new places to sit. For visitors they are a reason to step into the old town and walk among the works of Votiva and Ipogea. The #1 in the title says this is only the beginning.
